What is a Dog to You? For Me, They’re Family.
Dogs are more than just pets. They’re loyal companions, protectors, and a source of unconditional love. To me, dogs are family.
Growing up, my family always had dogs. We had a Border Collie x Labrador named Toppy who loved to run in our gArden and play fetch. He was always by my side, whether I was doing homework or playing outside. This dog was more than just animals we took care of - he wwas a part of our family.
As an adult, I’ve continued to have dogs in my life. Currently, I look after my friend’s Shih Tzu named Ainslie. She’s a small, sweet girl who loves to cudder and snuggle up on the couch. When my husband comes home from work, seeing Ainslie’s wagging tail and happy face is the highlight of our day.
I’m not alone in feeling this way about dogs. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 36.5% of households in the United States have at least one dog. This statistic doesn’t surprise me, as dogs offer so much to their owners. They’re great companions for people of all ages, from children to seniors. Dogs can help reduce stress, increase physical activity, and provide emotional support.
Dogs are also incredible protectors. They can guard our homes and alert us to danger. Many dogs are trained as service animals, assisting people with disabilities or providing emotional support to those who need it. Their intelligence and loyalty make them ideal for these roles.
Of course, dogs aren’t perfect. They can be messy, chew up your favorite shoes, or bark at the wrong times. But to me, these quirks are part of what makes them so lovable. Dogs are unique individuals with their own personalities, just like people.
So, what is a dog to you? Whether you’re a lifelong dog owner or thinking about getting your first furry friend, I hope you’ll consider dogs as more than just pets. They’re loyal companions, protectors, and family members who bring so much joy and love into our lives.
