Papillon has strong roots in Europe dating back to the Renaissance times (14th and 17th centuries), with the Pap being seen in many paintings. They were popular with merchants that traded in the Mediterranean, royalty, nobility and the aristocracy. It was fashionable for them to have their portraits painted with their paps.
